Misfuelling – an expensive mistake
You may think it could never happen to you but misfuelling is more common than many people think. It only takes a temporary lapse in concentration and the damage is done.
Misfuelling incidents occur with petrol being pumped into diesel-powered cars, as the narrow petrol nozzle can easily fit into a diesel vehicle.
The cost of repair depends on whether the vehicle has been driven before the mistake is noticed. If it has not been started, the tank usually only needs to be drained. However, fuel pumps in many new vehicles are often primed by the central locking system so even if the driver spots their mistake, it may be too late if he/she has unlocked the doors. If the car has been driven, major repairs may be needed, costs can vary anywhere between £300 to £8,000.
The contaminated fuel drained from the car presents an environmental hazard, and has to be disposed of at specialist disposal centres, incurring more costs to the motorist.
Over half of the vehicles in Europe are now diesel powered, with this figure expected to increase further – adding to the potential for misfuelling.
